Visual texts can often be analysed in terms of: technical codes, symbolic codes and written codes. Technical codes encompass the devices used to create the image (e.g. camera, lighting); symbolic codes refer to the codes that express meaning from the visual content of the image (e.g. objects, costume, lighting); and written codes refer to titles, captions and other written material. The language of film includes technical codes, symbolic codes, written codes and audio codes (e.g. interpretation of music, speech and sound effects). 3.
